Three Singaporean companies have been included in Corporate Knights’ list of the world’s 100 most sustainable big corporations for 2020, reported The Business Times.

Singtel, CapitaLand and City Developments (CDL) placed 95th, 63rd and 36th respectively in the list.

CapitaLand and City Developments both dropped in rankings, as they previously placed 33rd and 25th the previous year. Singtel, meanwhile, had an upward movement as it did not make the list in 2019.

The top 100 companies selected this year came from a pool of 7,395 publicly listed companies having more than $1 billion (S$1.3 billion) in revenue, and assessed in relation to their industry peers utilising publicly available information.

The Global 100 list ranks the large corporations all over the world, using metrics such as the reduction of waste and carbon, CEO-to-average-worker-pay ratio, board gender diversity and “clean revenue”.

This “clean revenue” metric, which takes up 50% of each company’s score, measures the percentage of revenue coming from services or products having environmental, or well-defined social benefits.

“Climate change affects all of us and concerted action is needed to mitigate its impact. Beyond delivering financial performance, businesses have a responsibility to their investors, stakeholders and the community to drive environmental stewardship,” said Sherman Kwek, CEO of CDL group.

“As one of Asia’s largest diversified real estate groups, CapitaLand can effect a greater positive influence through our enlarged portfolio and operations,” added Lynette Leong, chief sustainability officer for CapitaLand.

The list was comprised of 18 companies from Asia, 49 from Europe, 29 from Canada and US, three from Latin America and one from Africa.
